Phenomena-driven science! Phenomena are observable, naturally occurring events that are everywhere and spark student questions and investigations. Ask students to observe the DCI-linked phenomena in the video and complete the attached student sheet prior to remote learning discussions.
Observations: Carefully watch the hummingbird flight video. Gather all the evidence you can from the video, and write down everything you observe.
Generate Questions: How does the structure of the hummingbird allow it to feed from the flowers? How does the structure of the entire plant allow for the hummingbird to feed? How does the structure and shape of an individual flower allow the hummingbird to eat? Is there an advantage or disadvantage for the plant when the hummingbird feeds from it? Does the color of the flower attract the hummingbird?
