How to Use Forensics to Celebrate Halloween

This October, treat your students to a spooky mystery or turn your classroom into an immersive crime scene to add some science to your Halloween celebrations.
Developing and Analyzing Urine Samples as a Model of Kidney Function

Abnormal urine composition often indicates disease or infection. Diabetes is often diagnosed after a patient has a positive test for glucose in the urine. Diabetes is the result of an inability to absorb glucose from the blood. The body compensates for these elevated blood glucose levels by filtering the glucose out through the kidneys; the excess glucose exits the body through the urine.
Mealworms and Superworms in the News

Mealworms and superworms are probably best known for their use as feeder insects for chickens and reptiles, but they are both making news for very different reasons.
Teach Restriction Analysis with Carolina and the DNA Learning Center

Engage your students by going hands-on with a classic technique in molecular biology known as restriction analysis. These kits were developed in cooperation with the DNA Learning Center (DNALC) at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In this video, watch experts from the DNALC perform restriction analysis and explain how to use this technique for teaching DNA, restriction enzymes, and gel electrophoresis.
Newton’s Law of Cooling

Newton’s law of cooling states that the rate at which an object cools is proportional to the difference in temperature between the object and the object’s surroundings. Simply put, a glass of hot water will cool down faster in a cold room than in a hot room. This simple principle is relatively easy to prove, and the experiment has repeatable and reproducible results.
Cellular Respiration

Carolina has everything you need to teach photosynthesis. Understanding this concept sets the foundation for many other biological concepts.
Carolina’s Perfect Solution® Specimen Comparison

No need to compromise What if you could provide your students with a higher quality preserved specimen and an enhanced dissection experience while at the same time improving the safety of your learning environment? Does this sound too good to be true? We have developed a preservation formula that produces superior specimens without compromising classroom […]
Using Histology Slides to Enhance Mammalian Dissection

There are 4 main types of tissue: epithelial, muscle, nervous, and connective. Each type has a particular function and can be found to some degree in most organs. In order to understand the structure and function of each type of tissue, it is important to view them microscopically. Many tissues viewed with the naked eye […]
