Meet Raymond Wang

Raymond Wang
Vancouver, Canada

Age 17 at the time of innovation

Achievement: Developed a device that improves air quality and limits the spread of germs in airplanes.
Achoo! It’s no fun to be near someone who sneezes or coughs without covering their mouth, especially in a confined area like an airplane.

When Raymond learned that a sneeze from someone having the flu on a plane could spread the virus to 17 other passengers, he got to work. Using a computer simulation, he modeled how air flows through a plane, then created additional simulations to test possible solutions.

The result is the global inlet director, a curved piece of plastic that creates personalized breathing zones by redirecting the flow of air inside an airplane cabin. Raymond’s simulations show that when a passenger coughs or sneezes, the pathogens are pushed down and filtered out before reaching other people.

When multiple units are installed, they can reduce disease transmission by up to 55 times and increase fresh air delivery by 190 percent, improving the health and safety of the passengers and the flight crews.
